How Does a Hot Air Balloon Work in Basic Terms?

Imagine you're holding a balloon filled with air. When you let it go, it floats up because the air inside is lighter than the air around it. Hot air balloons work in a similar way, but they use hot air instead of helium or regular air.

A hot air balloon is a giant, colorful bag called an envelope. This envelope is filled with air and heated up by burners at the bottom. When the air inside the balloon gets hot, it expands and becomes lighter than the cooler air outside. This difference in weight creates what we call buoyancy, which is a force that pushes the balloon upward.

Picture a teeter-totter with one person on each end. If one person is heavier, that side goes down. In a hot air balloon, the heavy side is the cooler air outside, and the lighter side is the hot air inside the balloon. This makes the balloon go up into the sky.

To control the balloon's height, the pilot can adjust the temperature of the air inside. More heat means the air gets even lighter, causing the balloon to rise. If the pilot wants to descend, they can let the air cool down a bit, making the balloon heavier and causing it to come back down.

The wind also plays a big part in how a hot air balloon moves. Pilots can steer the balloon up or down to catch different wind currents, just like sailing a boat on the water.
